Great news for our middle school, lead by teacher Cassandra Jones!

Roots School in Haiku is pleased to announce it has received a $10,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation to support the creation of an innovative theater program in which Roots students will develop dramatic presentations to be performed for students island-wide. The focus will be on conflict resolution, healthy decision making, and how to make a positive contribution in our communities.

Leading the project is Cassandra Jones, head teacher for the Roots Middle School. She received her Certification in Secondary Education and Masters in Fine Arts in Asian Theater and Directing from UH Manoa. “Cassandra understands how to use theater to address the social issues of teens,” says Melita Nasiah Charan, Executive Director of Roots School. “Her dynamic theater experience combined with her teaching experience makes her the perfect person to guide this project.”

The Atherton Family Foundation has been a wonderful supporter of our school, and we are so grateful to them for continuing to support us in our quest to become a thriving, supportive school for Maui’s middle school students!
